Catching Up in Online Sessions

These ideas from Nancy White's blog resonates with what happens in an online session where everybody is busy with their professional and personal lives. It's something I'm always attentive. However, I really enjoyed the idea of the reentry point. I try to do that with participants of the online sessions I'm moderating, but in an individual basis, by contacting each one of them. Maybe, I could improve my strategies by inviting the ones who haven't really integrated to the group to a chat only with them. I'd thought about it before, but never try. It's time to change approaches and see how new alternatives work for different groups within the big crowd.

Hi, my friend.

Like our mutual friend Gabi, I liked those strategies a lot: they addressed real needs of both online facilitators and online learners and they were all DOABLE. Also like Gabi, I was particularly struck by "Forgive yourself and let go of what was not done and focus on what can still be done." It made me realize (yet again) how many times I've become "paralyzed" because I became so focused on what wasn't being done that I lost many opportunities to strengthen that which could still be done. How many times do I have to learn that lesson?!

I was also impressed by the tail end of your post: "It's time to change approaches and see how new alternatives work for different groups within the big crowd." This remark is eminently characteristic of how you think and what you do, Carlinha—and it's one of many, many reasons that I greatly admire your work.

Beijocas!

Hi Carla,

I like these strategies that you've included in this post. Different things will work for different learners. These are great tips not only for teachers to have, but also to share with their students, so they can make choices about how to best catch up when they fall behind in online courses.

When I read about "learning buddies," I thought that would be really powerful; I know that I won't go for a run in the morning without a running partner, so a learning buddy may be just what I need to keep me on track in an online course. I'm glad to count you, Carla, as one of those who can keep me motivated and participating in online courses, communities, and projects!

Dear Gabi, Mary and Dennis.

Thanks for adding your reflections to the interesting and effective strategies shared by Nancy. Mary, I agree with you that having "learning buddies" is just a fantastic way to be motivated to keep moving forward. You and Dennis are certainly my true learning buddies. I could never go online and learn so much and dare so much without you and others in our network.
